What a work order does that the estimate can't
The estimate sold the job to the homeowner. The work order runs the job for the crew, and it speaks a different language: not "transform your home" but "SW Cashmere Eggshell, two coats, patch the stairwell wall, don't park in front of the neighbor's mailbox." This template is the one-page version: customer and site info, crew and schedule, scope per surface with products to verify, the materials load list, special instructions, and two signatures (issued and completed).
The fields that earn their space
Site access and pets. Gate codes, lockbox numbers, "Daisy is friendly, the cat is not." The line the crew reads in the driveway.
Scope per surface with a verify column. Same table shape as your contract's scope section, so nothing gets lost translating the sale into the work. The crew checks each can's label against the sheet before cutting in; wrong-color days die here.
The load list. Paint and primer with quantities, then the sundries (tape, drops, caulk, sleeves, the sprayer). Filled out the night before, it's the difference between painting at 8:05 and a supply-house run at 9:30.
Special instructions. The two blank lines that hold everything the walkthrough surfaced: the piano that doesn't move, the office that must be usable by Thursday, the HOA's quiet hours.
Completion sign-off. The crew lead signs that the scope is done as written, which triggers the walkthrough and the invoice the same day.
